This is a fine and substantial pair of Chinese cast bronze censers, each modelled in the form of a seated mythical Buddhist Lion, or Shishi. The two figures are presented as a mirrored pair, positioned facing one another in a stance of dignified guardianship. Their powerful bodies are masterfully cast with intricate and delicate openwork, featuring a dense pattern of scrolling foliate or cloud-like motifs, allowing for the emission of incense smoke.

The solid-cast heads are detachable, serving as lids for the censer bodies. Each head is rendered with stylized feline features, including pronounced, rounded snouts, alert, pricked ears, and large, wide-set eyes beneath defined orbital ridges. The areas around the eyes and snout are further embellished with finely incised floral or cloud-scroll details.

A prominent, decorated collar with a repeating geometric pattern delineates the head from the body. The lions are depicted in a seated, powerful posture, supported by four solid, muscular legs that terminate in well-defined paws with articulated claws. The shoulders and haunches are accentuated with raised, circular cartouches containing further pierced foliate decoration, echoing the pattern of the main body. Each beast is completed by a flamboyant, S-scroll tail that rises dynamically, terminating in a foliate, flame-like flourish. The whole is covered in a deep, dark brown to black patina, enriched by age and handling, with areas of natural malachite green patination visible within the recesses of the casting.
